Who doesn’t love talking about pop culture? We do it every day. But what are we learning and are we asking critical questions?
Many of us grew up with two literacies – reading and writing. Today there’s another literacy, Media Literacy. This growing field teaches critical consumption and creation of media. With technological advances also comes increased exposure – the average American sees between 3,000 to 5,000 advertisements every day. Is this media saturation? What are the effects of living in this consumer and image-based culture? Questioning the messages and understanding the effects begin by engaging critical-thinking skills – a first step to becoming media literate.
Whether you are a parent, teacher, or student – developing media literacy skills is critical for a healthy mind and body, a healthy democracy, and a healthy planet.
